Is the New $6,200 Rerode RX eMoto Too Good to be True?

The upcoming Rerode RX eMoto is built to take the fight to the mid-sized segment, but does it actually have the goods to compete? We take a closer look at the RX’s confirmed specs to get a better idea.

After Surron started hurling lawsuits at its fellow Chinese competitors, obvious copycats in the eMoto space started becoming fewer and further between. Brands are slowly but surely learning to channel the “approximate vibes” of their most popular competition without stepping over any legal boundaries, but the new Rerode RX appears to be walking a finer line than most.

Stand 10 feet back and squint your eyes, and from the side you’ll swear you’re staring at the new Bonnell 805. Do the same trick from the front, and you might actually mistake the Rerode RX for a Stark Varg MX. Dig into the specs, and you’d likely mistake the RX for the Talaria Komodo. Let’s just say the multitude of similarities is a bit too close to be a coincidence and leave it at that for now.

Still, any way you look at it, it’s fair to say that the Rerode looks like it means business. What remains to be seen, however, is whether the RX is actually equipped to compete with the premium, high-performance machines it emulates.

Some of the initial specs certainly make us think so. Weighing in at 225 pounds with a 55.1-inch wheelbase and 35.8-inch seat height, the Rerode RX is clearly in the middleweight segment: Size-wise, it’s got an identical wheelbase to the Dust Moto Hightail, but splits the difference weight-wise between the 235 lb. Hightail and 216 lb. Komodo.

“By the numbers, the RX is a bit taller, longer, and heavier than the 805 it so closely resembles.” photo: Rerode

As for the battery, the Rerode RX is a dead wringer for the Talaria Komodo. Specs here are identical, as both sport a 97V 45AH battery. Rerode claims their Samsung cell-based pack is good for 75 miles at a mild pace (31 mph), which should raise some eyebrows considering Talaria’s same-sized, Samsung-equipped pack claims the same range at a much more conservative 15 mph. Something could be lost in translation here, of course, but we’ll be interested to range test the two back-to-back all the same.

Power-wise, Rerode says the RX’s gear-reduction motor is good for 35 kW (47 hp) of peak power, and 790 Nm (583 lb-ft) of torque. That’s not quite up to snuff with Bonnell’s belt-driven 42 kilowatt motor (in a lighter, shorter package, mind you), but does slightly outclass both the Talaria and Dust Moto (32 kW each) it’ll more closely compete with if that claim proves to be accurate.

Initial MSRP for the Rerode RX is currently set at $6,200, or at least that’s the case for the current round of preorders. That figure won’t include taxes or shipping fees, of course, but it still makes the Rerode RX about $2,050 less expensive than the newly launched Bonnell 805, over $4,000 less than the predicted MSRP for the Hightail, and a tad more expensive than the $5,990 Talaria Komodo, if we’re going off US pricing.

That’ll be the main selling point for most buyers in the midsize market, of course, but price isn’t the only place the Rerode differs dramatically from much of the current competition. The RX will come with RFloXa suspension front and rear, for instance, which we’ve found to be a decent budget-friendly option, but a far cry from the top-tier Sirris suspension that’s standard on the more premium Bonnell and Dust Moto machines. Talaria’s Komodo sticks to in-house branded hardware front and rear, and unfortunately specs its shock with a variable-rate spring, so again, the Komodo looks to be the most direct comparison component-wise.

“RFloXa suspension is typically an upgrade over the basic DNM-type components found on Chinese bikes, but historically it’s been a far cry from premium Sirris components.” photo: Rerode

The tech package on the RX also appears to be fairly standard. Multiple app-tunable ride modes are included on the Rerode, as is a 4″ TFT dash, but features like the traction control, eClutch, and variable function lever found on the Bonnell are notably absent from the budget-friendly Rerode. The added tunability would be an upgrade compared to Talaria’s preset ride modes on the Komodo, but from the look of things, we’d likely give Dust the upper hand here for the Hightail’s tunability and slick “tank-mounted” display.

Naturally, we’ll withhold our judgement on all fronts until we get a chance to ride each of these machines back to back, but on specs and style alone, the new Rerode RX is bound to upset the middleweight segment. We’re talking 47 horsepower for Surron Ultra Bee prices: is there really any doubt Rerode is about to pick up some market share?

If you want to be one of the first folks to see for yourself, preorders are already open for the RX here at ECR, and the $6,200 total MSRP gets your foot in the door for the first batch of deliveries. We expect shipping/delivery times for the first round of RXs estimated at 6-8 weeks, so you could theoretically have one under your Christmas tree this year if you hop to it.
